The Town of Labrador City, with a population of approximately 8,000 is the larger of two communities within the region of Labrador West. Located on the mainland portion of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, this modern, industrialized community is situated in the lower westerly corner of Labrador, approximately 22 km from the border of Quebec, nestled amongst the rolling hills of the iron rich Labrador Trough. Reporting to the CAO, you will be responsible for the direction, general management, and overall administration of the Recreation Department. We are seeking a dynamic and energetic Director of Recreation & Community Services to provide leadership within all areas of the Department. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the culture of the department, and positively contribute to the organization’s culture and strategic priorities. Developing the goals, objectives and practices required for the effective operation of the Department, you will oversee the planning of programs and events which provide balanced recreation/leisure services for the residents of Labrador City. You will provide proactive leadership, creativity, and initiative to ensure that recreation facilities, parks and playgrounds are responsive and aligned to community needs.
To prepare for this position, you ideally possess post-secondary education in Recreation, Physical Education, Business Administration, or a related discipline. You possess five (5) years’ experience in a management or supervisory role, accompanied by five (5) years of progressively increased responsibilities or positions. Your experience within a public sector or an equivalent environment will be ideal for a successful transition. Additional experience in areas such as community liaison, partnership development, customer service, recreation operations, strategic planning, project management and facility management, will help ensure your success. Additionally, your highly developed interpersonal, leadership, conflict resolution, problem-solving and decision-making skills will align well with your technical experience and knowledge. Communicating and cultivating strong relationships with other departments, partners, facility users, and community organizations is an essential part of your managing skills.
